Description
Ebony (Diospyros spp.) is one of the most iconic and luxurious hardwoods in the world, renowned for its deep black colour, fine grain, and smooth, almost stone-like texture. Native to parts of Africa, Asia, and India, the most highly prized varieties—such as African Ebony (Diospyros crassiflora)—are known for their uniform jet-black heartwood, sometimes accented with dark brown or grey streaks.
Exceptionally dense and heavy, Ebony sinks in water and offers outstanding durability and natural resistance to wear, making it ideal for fine woodworking. It is a favourite choice for piano keys, fingerboards, knife scales, high-end furniture, and decorative inlays. When worked with care and sharp tools, it finishes to a silky, polished surface with a rich natural sheen.
Due to its density and the way it dries, small surface cracks or checking may be present, which are common characteristics of natural ebony. These minor imperfections are often embraced in artisan work for their authenticity and can be stabilised if needed.
As a rare and slow-growing species, Ebony is typically used in smaller, highly crafted items. When responsibly sourced, it remains a timeless material, celebrated for its unmatched elegance, hardness, and historical prestige.
