    Elm – 8″ x 8″ x 2″

    £10.75

    Description

Elm (Ulmus spp.) is a versatile hardwood found across North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. It is known for its light to medium brown heartwood, often displaying hints of red or gray. The grain is typically interlocked, giving Elm a distinct, wavy pattern that adds to its visual appeal. With a coarse texture and moderate natural luster, this wood is favored for both practical and decorative applications.

Elm is highly valued for its strength and durability, yet it remains relatively easy to work with using both hand and machine tools. It bends well under steam, making it a popular choice for furniture, cabinetry, and boatbuilding. Additionally, its shock resistance makes it ideal for crafting tool handles, hockey sticks, and flooring.

Despite being moderately dense, Elm boasts impressive flexibility and toughness, making it a preferred material for chair seats and other curved components. Its interlocked grain enhances its resistance to splitting, adding to its longevity in high-use environments.

Elm is also utilized in musical instrument crafting, particularly in the construction of drum shells and certain stringed instrument components. It is sometimes used for knife handles, where its durability and distinct grain pattern add both function and aesthetic appeal.

Due to its susceptibility to Dutch Elm Disease, conservation efforts and sustainable forestry practices play a key role in maintaining its availability. Despite this challenge, Elm remains a favorite among woodworkers, prized for its resilience, unique grain, and historical significance in fine craftsmanship.
