Description
Xylia (Xylia xylocarpa), commonly known as Ironwood, is a remarkably hard and durable hardwood native to Southeast Asia and parts of India. Known for its extreme density and strength, Xylia has long been valued in heavy construction, railway sleepers, and tool handles—but it is also gaining recognition among woodworkers and artisans for its aesthetic appeal and resilience.
The heartwood ranges from medium to dark reddish-brown, often with golden or darker streaks, and typically darkens with age. Its grain is generally interlocked, with a fine to medium texture and a natural lustre that improves beautifully with finishing. Because of its hardness, Xylia can be challenging to work with, requiring carbide tools and pre-drilling for fasteners, but it rewards with a smooth, polished finish and excellent wear resistance.
Thanks to its incredible density and natural resistance to decay, insects, and moisture, Xylia is ideal for both indoor and outdoor uses, including flooring, decking, turned items, and statement furniture pieces. Its striking appearance and mechanical properties make it a favourite for projects where both strength and beauty are paramount.
Due to its toughness, slight surface checking or end cracks may occur, especially in air-dried stock—but these are typical of such dense species and can often be stabilised or incorporated into the final design.
