Myrtle (Myrtus communis) is an aromatic, evergreen shrub or small tree native to the Mediterranean region. However, in woodworking, the term “Myrtle” often refers to the wood of the Pacific Myrtle tree (Umbellularia californica), which is found in the western United States, particularly in California and Oregon. This wood is highly prized for its rich colour, fine texture, and exceptional workability.
Myrtle wood features a beautiful range of hues, from pale yellows to rich golden browns, with occasional reddish tinges or dark streaks. The wood’s grain is typically straight but can sometimes be wavy or curly, offering a unique aesthetic appeal. Myrtle is a moderately dense hardwood with good strength and durability, making it well-suited for a variety of woodworking applications. It is often used in the creation of fine furniture, cabinetry, musical instruments, and decorative items due to its excellent finishing properties and the ability to take on a polished, lustrous appearance.
