Camal Thorn or Kameeldoring (Vachellia erioloba), is a unique hardwood native to the arid regions of Southern Africa. This tree, often referred to as the “Tree of Life” by the San people, is known for its distinctive long, straight thorns and its ability to thrive in harsh environments.
The wood itself is dense and hard, with a Janka hardness rating of 3,680 lbf (16,370 N). It has a rich, dark reddish-brown heartwood and a yellow sapwood. The grain is typically straight but can also feature attractive interlocking patterns, adding to its visual appeal.
Camel Thorn wood is highly valued for its durability and resistance to decay and insects. It is commonly used for making high-quality furniture, flooring, turned objects, and decorative items. The wood’s unique appearance and warm color palette make it a popular choice for those seeking a touch of the exotic in their projects.
Due to its scarcity and protected status in South Africa, Camel Thorn wood is considered one of the most expensive hardwoods available. Sustainable harvesting practices are essential to ensure its continued availability.
