Description
Castello Boxwood (Calycophyllum multiflorum), also known as Ivorywood or Palo Blanco, is a prized hardwood native to South America. This wood is celebrated for its light brown to pale yellow heartwood, which provides a subtle yet elegant appearance. The grain tends to be straight to slightly interlocked, and the fine, uniform texture gives it a slightly lustrous look.
Renowned for its workability, Castello Boxwood is relatively easy to machine, making it a favorite for intricate carvings, detailed inlays, and precise turnings. It is especially cherished for its application in crafting musical instruments, such as woodwind instruments like flutes, clarinets, and bagpipes, due to its dense and tight grain structure that produces superior resonance and tonal qualities.
Castello Boxwood is moderately durable and offers excellent resistance to marine borers. It turns, glues, and finishes well, making it suitable for a variety of indoor applications. While not commonly available in the United States, it is marketed as an alternative to true European Boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) and is often sold as turning blanks.
