Description
Castello Boxwood (Calycophyllum multiflorum), also referred to as Ivorywood or Palo Blanco, is a highly valued hardwood found in South America. It is renowned for its light brown to pale yellow heartwood, which gives the wood a refined and understated elegance. The grain is generally straight, though it may occasionally display slight interlocking patterns, and the fine, consistent texture contributes to its subtle sheen.
Known for its ease of manipulation, Castello Boxwood is favored by craftsmen for detailed carvings, intricate inlays, and precise turning projects. Its dense and compact grain makes it especially ideal for crafting musical instruments, particularly woodwind instruments such as flutes, clarinets, and bagpipes, where its resonance and tonal properties are highly valued.
Moderately durable, Castello Boxwood is resistant to damage from marine borers, and it holds up well to turning, gluing, and finishing processes, making it suitable for a range of indoor uses. While it is not widely found in the United States, it serves as a substitute for the more common European Boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) and is often available in the form of turning blanks.
