Goncalo Alves (Astronium fraxinifolium), commonly known as Tigerwood, is a dense and durable hardwood native to Central and South America. This wood is highly regarded for its striking color and vivid grain pattern. It typically features a rich golden to reddish-brown base with dark, contrasting streaks that create the tiger-stripe effect from which it gets its name. The grain is generally straight to interlocking, and it can display beautiful variations in figure, such as waves or curls, giving each piece of wood a unique appearance. Its fine, smooth texture enhances its natural luster, adding to its visual depth.
When it comes to working with Goncalo Alves, its density and hardness make it a bit challenging to machine, but its workability is still relatively good with sharp tools. It’s a favorite choice for fine furniture making, cabinetry, flooring, and woodturning. Its exceptional appearance and unique grain make it especially popular for custom inlays, veneers, and decorative pieces. Goncalo Alves also performs well in crafting musical instruments, such as guitars, due to its resonant qualities. The wood polishes to a rich, smooth finish, bringing out the warmth and contrast in its stripes.
Goncalo Alves is known for its remarkable strength and density, offering excellent dimensional stability and impact resistance. It also has a natural resistance to decay and insects, making it an excellent choice for both indoor and outdoor applications. Its durability ensures that it will stand the test of time, even in high-use situations. This wood is highly valued for products that require both beauty and strength, such as tool handles, cabinetry, flooring, and even sports equipment like archery bows and arrow footings.
As one of the most coveted hardwoods in the market, Goncalo Alves continues to be a go-to choice for artisans and woodworkers looking for an exotic material that combines both beauty and functionality. Sustainable forestry practices are critical to preserving its availability for future generations. With its stunning appearance, exceptional durability, and versatility, Goncalo Alves remains a favorite among those who appreciate premium-quality wood for their projects.
