Gongalo Alves (Astronium spp.) is a premium hardwood native to Central and South America. It is celebrated for its rich reddish-brown heartwood, often featuring undertones of deep amber and dark brown. The grain is typically interlocked or wavy, though it can exhibit beautiful variations such as ribbon-like figuring and bold streaks, and the wood’s naturally fine texture contributes to its smooth luster.
Renowned for its durability, Gongalo Alves is moderately difficult to machine due to its density but finishes exceptionally well, making it a favorite for furniture, cabinetry, veneers, flooring, and decorative woodwork. Its high strength and resistance to wear also make it ideal for high-performance applications such as tool handles, turned objects, and even archery bows. The wood polishes to a smooth, elegant finish, enhancing its depth and striking contrast.
Gongalo Alves is a very dense hardwood, offering excellent dimensional stability, impact resistance, and durability. Its natural resistance to decay and insect attacks further adds to its appeal, ensuring longevity in both indoor and outdoor applications.
As one of the most sought-after hardwoods in fine woodworking, Gongalo Alves remains a staple in high-end projects. Sustainable forestry practices help maintain its availability for future generations. Its timeless beauty, strength, and reliability make it a favorite among artisans and manufacturers alike.
