Lemonwood (Calycophyllum candidissimum)
Lemonwood, also known as Degame, is a fine and durable hardwood native to Central and South America as well as parts of the Caribbean. Historically renowned for its use in traditional archery bows, tool handles, and precision instruments, it remains highly valued for applications that require strength, toughness, and resilience.
The heartwood is pale yellow to light cream, often darkening slightly with age to a warmer golden tone. Its grain is typically straight, though it may occasionally be irregular, and the wood has a fine, even texture with a natural smoothness. This allows Lemonwood to take a clean finish and polish to a soft lustre.
Exceptionally strong and dense, Lemonwood offers good resistance to shock and wear. It can be challenging to work due to its hardness, but with sharp tools it machines, turns, and finishes to a high standard. These qualities make it a preferred choice not only for bows and handles but also for fine joinery and specialty woodworking.
⚠️ Note: As a naturally grown hardwood, individual boards may vary in colour, grain, or contain small natural features that enhance the uniqueness of each piece.
