Description

Pink Ivory (Berchemia zeyheri) is a rare and highly prized hardwood native to Southern Africa. This unique wood is known for its striking pink to reddish-brown color, which can range from pale brownish pink to a vibrant, almost neon pink. The heartwood is particularly valued for its bright pink hue, while the sapwood is typically pale yellow to light brown.

Pink Ivory trees can grow to impressive heights of 100-130 feet (30-40 meters) with trunk diameters of 3-5 feet (1-1.5 meters). The wood is dense and hard, with a Janka hardness rating of 3,230 lbf (14,370 N), making it highly durable and resistant to wear. It has a fine, even texture and a straight to interlocked grain pattern, often displaying beautiful curly or fiddleback figures.

Due to its density, Pink Ivory can be challenging to work with, as it tends to blunt cutting edges and can cause tear out during planning. However, it turns and finishes well, making it ideal for woodturning, carving, and creating small decorative objects such as knife handles, chess pieces, and billiard cues. Its vibrant color and unique grain patterns also make it a popular choice for veneers and inlays.

Despite its beauty and durability, Pink Ivory is a scarce commodity and is considered one of the most expensive hardwoods in the world. Sustainable forestry practices are essential to ensure its continued availability.
