Purpleheart (Peltogyne spp.) is a highly durable and visually striking hardwood native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. It is most famous for its rich, vibrant purple colour, which initially appears as a deep brownish-purple and becomes more intense with exposure to light and air. Purpleheart is exceptionally strong, dense, and resistant to decay, insects, and moisture, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. This durability makes it a favourite for high-end furniture, flooring, boatbuilding, and heavy-duty construction. Although its density can make it challenging to work with, it takes a smooth finish and polishes beautifully, offering an unmatched blend of exotic beauty and durability.
