Purpleheart (Peltogyne spp.) is a dense, durable hardwood native to Central and South America, renowned for its distinctive vibrant purple to violet heartwood. The wood darkens over time, developing deeper hues of purple and brown. Purpleheart has a fine, uniform texture and a straight to slightly interlocking grain, adding to its striking visual appeal.
Its density makes it highly durable and resistant to wear, decay, and insects, making it suitable for a wide range of uses, including furniture, flooring, and fine woodwork. Purpleheart is also favored for crafting musical instruments, handles, and turnings. Its ability to take on a high polish enhances its natural beauty.
This hardwood is especially prized for its hardness and strength, with a Janka rating of approximately 2,500 lbf (11,100 N), making it an excellent choice for high-impact applications. It’s also used in outdoor furniture and decking, as it holds up well under varying environmental conditions.
Purpleheart’s unique color and robust properties make it a popular choice among artisans and woodworkers. With sustainable harvesting practices, its availability remains stable, ensuring this extraordinary wood can continue to be used for generations to come. Its rare beauty, combined with exceptional strength, makes Purpleheart a favored material in both functional and artistic woodcraft.
