Description
Purpleheart (Peltogyne spp.)
Purpleheart, sometimes called Amaranth, is a striking tropical hardwood native to Central and South America. Its freshly cut heartwood appears a dull brown but quickly turns a rich, vibrant purple when exposed to light, later deepening to a darker violet or purplish-brown with age. The grain is generally straight, though it can be wavy or irregular, and the texture is fine to medium with a natural sheen.
Exceptionally strong and dense, Purpleheart is valued for its durability, resistance to wear, and bold colour, making it popular for fine furniture, flooring, veneers, turnery, inlays, and decorative items. It machines relatively well with sharp tools, though its hardness can be challenging, and it finishes beautifully to a smooth polish that highlights its unique purple tones.
⚠️ Note: Being a natural exotic hardwood, Purpleheart may contain small surface checks, irregular grain, or colour variations, which contribute to its distinct character.
