Red Amboyna Burr (Pterocarpus indicus), also known as Narrah Burl, is one of the most sought-after and luxurious burls in the world. Originating primarily from Southeast Asia, this rare hardwood is admired for its rich, deep red to reddish-brown tones interwoven with highly figured burl eyes, swirls, and intricate grain patterns. The stunning contrast and complexity of its appearance make it a favourite for decorative and fine woodworking.
Red Amboyna Burr is exceptionally dense and fine-textured, polishing to a lustrous, glassy finish that enhances its vivid colour and dramatic figure. It is prized for use in high-end veneers, knife scales, jewellery boxes, turned objects, luxury interiors, and inlay work.
Due to its rarity and natural formation, pieces may include small voids, bark inclusions, or minor checks, which are typical of burl woods and often embraced as part of their organic character. Its beauty, combined with its workability and rarity, makes Red Amboyna Burr a true collector’s wood, celebrated by artisans and craftsmen around the globe.
